The Kevin Durant sweepstakes are underway. Every team in the NBA, excluding maybe the Cavs, are putting together their game plans to bring the free agent to be to their city. We’ve heard from the Warriors, Knicks and Lakers and now the Grizzlies plans have surfaced.
Marc Gasol is the center piece for the Grizzlies and is the key to getting KD to Memphis. According to yahoosports.com, he signed a 5-year, $110 million contract in July and has been a really solid player for years. Point guard Mike Conley will be a free agent this summer but re-signing him is a priority for the team. That leaves them with Gasol, Conley and Kevin Durant as a BIG 3 possibility which I think could work really well. These three guys can all play at an All Star level and their styles would work well together. Gasol plays around the rim and is a great passer for a big man. Conley does a little bit of it all, he can score, control the offense and the pace of the game. If Durant was added to the team, I don’t think Gasol or Conley would have an issue playing second or third fiddle.
With all that being said the Grizzlies are a long shot to land KD and for me it’s solely based off the market. I would say the Lakers, Knicks and Wizards are the favorites to land KD if he leaves Oklahoma City. With going back home like LeBron being the popular thing to do, I think the Washington Wizards will be the team Kevin Durant calls home next year.
