With the Grammys just a day a way, Hip Hop sensation and Compton’s favorite son picked up another accolade on the way to potentially a record 11 Grammys if he wins for every category he’s nominated in. On Saturday, Lamar’s beloved City of Compton, led by Mayor Aja Brown, awarded the rapper a Key to The City ahead of Sunday night’s ceremony. Visibly emotional and moved by the event and the words of praise heaped upon him, Lamar thanked the City that bred his humble beginnings and promised this award signified a life long commitment to the City and ultimately tenure as Mayor. But before Compton residents can head down to their local polling place and vote him into leadership, they’ll have to wait twenty five years.
“I’m overwhelmed, you’ll have to give me a moment,” said Lamar at the podium. “I keep thinking about being in this moment takes me back twenty something years ago.”
