Boise State appeared to have a won their game against Colorado State thanks to a buzzer beater with 0.7 seconds left by James Webb III, but an odd replay review by officials resulted in an overturned basket which allowed the game to continue. Boise State went on to lose the game in 2OT 97-93.
Replay videos clearly show that Webb got his shot off before time expired and the shot was initially called good by officials. However, for some inexplicable reason, officials pulled out a stopwatch and timed the last shot by hand and determined that Webb took 1.2 to 1.3 seconds to get his shot off.
Since there was only 0.7 seconds left in OT before Webb’s shot, the officials disallowed the basket and allowed the tie game to continue into a second overtime period which resulted in a defeat for Boise State.
It’s puzzling that the officials would resort to a stopwatch to determine an end of game call, but the circumstances surrounding the decision are unclear at this time. Boise State’s head coach has called for an explanation by the conference and many of BSU players expressed their disdain vocally.
Looking at the video replay, the shot clearly looked good. What do you think?
