There was a strong run of solid basketball viewing in the nineties and in the spirit of the good ol’ days I’ve put together my All-Time Nineties Movie Hooper Starting Five, which includes five players and a coach.
PG: Billy Hoyle (White Men Can’t Jump, 1992)-Elite distributor, capable scorer, can shoot, gets in opponent’s heads and loves to compete. Plus, he has a grasp of fundamentals that few nineties basketball movie characters possess
SG: Jesus Shuttlesworth (He Got Game, 1998)-The chosen one. There is nothing he can’t do on a basketball court and will space the floor for the Twin Towers in my starting lineup.
C: Neon Boudeaux (Blue Chips, 1994)-I couldn’t find a close second option when it came to selecting a center for my squad. Neon is the most dominant force in nineties hoop movies. Plus, he’s a high character guy and never accepted any gifts while at Western University.
PF Saleh (Air Up There, 1994)-Saleh is a bit of a project, but the upside is through the roof. Pairing him with Neon will ease the burden he has to endure in the paint and allow him to maximize his potential. Nobody is going to bang in the paint with my twin towers.
SF/PF Shephard (Above The Rim, 1994)-Shep gets my vote for the best movie hooper ever, he’s the GOAT. He can shoot, bang in the paint, take a beating, is relentless in big games, he never gets rusty and will provide the veteran wisdom and leadership my young roster needs.
Coach: Jake Shuttlesworth (He Got Game, 1994)- He taught Jesus everything he knows, knows the game and would be grateful for the opportunity right out of the penitentiary.
That’s mine. Who you got?
