New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis is enjoying another good season, averaging 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. Some predicted this would be a big year for the Brow. The season he legitimately challenged for league MVP. Davis started the year dealing with a hip injury and Steph Curry has a stranglehold on “best player in the world” status.
In Friday’s loss to the Trail Blazers, Davis banged knees with teammate Jrue Holiday and is being held out of Sunday’s game versus the Clippers as a precaution. In a conference call with reporters on Saturday, Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry discussed the possibility of shutting Davis down:
I wouldn’t say no to that. I wouldn’t say no to that. I think we’ve gotta be smart collectively, along with him. And like I said, I think we’ll know a lot more after they talk to the doctors today. And then I think there can be some decisions made. I think that’s something that he would definitely have to consider.
The Pelicans are 9 games out of the final playoff spot in the western conference. This has been an injury plagued season for the team and not what they envisioned after last year’s playoff berth. With less than 20 games remaining in the season and the prospect of being first round bait (again) for the defending champion Warriors, it may be best for Davis to shut it down.
