If you’re a fan of 90s hip-hop or generally a fan of good music, there is no doubt you’ve heard “The Score.” The classic 1996 album from one of the more frustrating rap groups of all time, the Fugees.
The album, a critical and commercial success, includes the hits How Many Mics, Ready or Not, Fu-Gee-La and the widely popular cover of Lori Lieberman’s Killing Me Softly. (Yes, Lieberman recorded the original, which was then covered by Roberta Flack.) And of course, who could forget the Chinese restaurant skit, one of the best album skits of all time! Lauryn, Wyclef and Pras burst onto the scene and caused the game to stand up and take notice.
It has been 20 years since that seminal album and the Fugees appear to be never ever, getting back together (did you think you’d ever see a Taylor Swift reference in a Fugee post?!) Individually they all achieved varying degrees of solo success, but this group threatened to change the game and left us all wanting more.
But, we do have a previously unreleased recording of a Fugees freestyle session from 1995, courtesy of English DJ Tim Westwood. Reminisce on what could have been and enjoy the sounds of Ms. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef and Pras.
