This is just the nature of the game, sometimes you have to rob Peter to pay Paul. That is exactly what the New York Jets are planning to do.
Contract talks between the Jets and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick broke down after his demands were too high. According to TheScore.com, Fitzpatrick reportedly is asking for $16 million per year which the Jets were not willing to accept.
But they have a plan. The Jets have asked D’Brickashaw Ferguson to take a huge pay cut in order to free up money to meet Fitzpatrick demands. Ferguson, who currently counts $14.1 million against cap, was asked to take a $4-5 million pay cut.
I’m not a fan of players taking pay cuts, if you agreed to pay them the money, you should do it. If Ferguson refuses to accept a pay cut, he could possibly be cut which would save the team $10 million.
One way or another a few things are sure to happen. Fitzpatrick will return due to the lack of a market for him as well as his recent success with the Jets. Ferguson will take some form of a pay cut or the Jets will release him. The club currently has only $600,000 in cap space just three weeks before the draft.
