The New York Knicks missed the playoffs for the second season in a row, and with Carmelo Anthony aging, he hopes the team is able to turn around into a contender again.
After failing with Derek Fisher as the head coach, the Knicks will have a big decision to make this offseason on who will lead their team. Carmelo hopes to be apart of that process, as he said in his interview with Russ Bengston of Complex.
“Because this is gonna be a long-term journey of playing and you consider me being part of that plan then I would want to know what’s going on.”
Anthony was then asked on “what makes a good coach,” which led to this quote from the All-Star small forward.
“I think being able to hold guys accountable, but also having a relationship with the player. Kind of seeing things from a players’ perspective as well as a coach’s perspective. I think if you can build that camaraderie between a coach and a player, I think you’re onto something.”
Many NBA fans might laugh at the comment, being that Melo is the star of the team and should be held accountable. However, Melo had a pretty efficient season, as Dime Mag notes.
While he is a score-first small forward, Anthony did 21.9 assist percentage, which is the highest of his career and second on the team this past season behind point guard Jose Calderon. While he is criticized also for his defense, Dime has stats that support Melo had one of his best season on that end of the floor as well.
We’ll see what the Knicks are able to do next season led by Melo, Kristaps Porzingis and company, with Phil Jackson at the front office helm.
