If you’ve always wondered how the rich stay rich, just ask Tim Kawakami.
Deadspin recounts the story of how the veteran writer for Mercury News was jobbed Jed York, the owner of the San Francisco 49ers, over a harmless joke on twitter and was completely oblivious to what he was doing.
On his podcast Kawakami details a story in which he said via twitter a few years ago, that he would buy lunch for York if the new football stadium was complete by 2014. The stadium was completed and as a man of his word, Kawakami invited York out for a meal with the richer of the two opting for the very posh French Laundry. In the end, Kawakami picked up the tab for himself, the owner, and his wife (who wasn’t part of the deal). A tab that amounted to $2100.
Without counting his money for him, it’s fair to say Kawakami easily earns more than a humble blogger like myself but there’s no way a sportswriter is comfortable with laying out that much on ONE meal.
What does one even eat for $2100? Did that include drinks? Imagine what Kawakami’s face looked like when he opened the leather envelope. Hopefully it was tasty.
