According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander would consider current TNT NBA analyst Kenny “The Jet” Smith for the vacant head coaching position. Kenny was a key member of the back to back champion Rockets in the mid 90s. When asked about the rumor by his fellow Inside the NBA host Charles Barkley, here’s what Kenny had to say:
I’ve always said anything basketball is me, and this is basketball. I enjoy being here. This is me.
Kenny doesn’t seem to jump at the opportunity. But, he’s a very savvy guy and this is a classic non answer, answer. He goes on to say:
Well, I told you if it’s basketball, it’s me. Under the right circumstances. I’ve been here 17 years, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.
The Rockets need a defensive minded head coach with a clear system and philosophy. Kenny hasn’t had any recent high level direct coaching experience. Plus, at this stage of life does he want the stress that comes with being a head coach? Hanging with Chuch, Shaq and EJ analyzing games seems like way more fun, and I’m sure it’s pretty lucrative as well.
We’ll see how serious Alexander is and if Kenny entertains the interview process. I think this is nothing more than an owner looking to recapture championship glory through a former player. But, we will have to wait and see.
