Bill Simmons is one of the most outspoken sports television personalities out there, so most knew it was only a matter of time before his energy clashed with ESPN.
There were many theories about why exactly Simmons’ contract with the worldwide leader wasn’t renewed; however, now it looks like we have an official reason, given by ESPN president, John Skipper himself.
After Simmons gave his theory about his firing possibly being at the behest of Disney CEO, Robert Iger, in line to try and purchase a stake in the Raiders or Chargers (Simmons routinely criticized the NFL harshly), Skipper set the record straight while speaking to the New York Times:
“Bill would rather spin conspiracy theories and be perceived as a martyr than take responsibility for his own actions. Let me be unequivocal and clear and take responsibility for my actions: I alone made the decision, and it had nothing to do with his comments about the commissioner. I severed our relationship with Bill because of his repeated lack of respect for this company and, more importantly, the people who work here.”
Strong words indeed.
Simmons new HBO show “Any Given Wednesday” debuts on June 22, where he’ll be taking on sports and popular culture issues.
Should be interesting.
