Ex-NFL WR Davone Bess has a documented history of questionable behavior, however this latest situation is just flat out weird.
Bess’ Arizona home was raided by 27 SWAT officers on June 19th, after Bess locked himself in the house, knife in hand and threatened to shoot officers.
TMZ has harrowing video of the encounter:
The whole story is very bizarre and reads like Bess is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Included in the official police report is Bess demanding things like hamburgers and k-y jelly after being taken into custody. Here is what the police say happened, via TMZ:
“as they [police] pursued Bess he rolled down his window and began making gestures with his hand shaped like a gun and motioning that he was shooting the officer.
Bess hightailed it away from officers in his Mercedes — but was tracked down at his home.
Inside his residence, cops say Bess would go to the window and front door — flashing a knife to cops … and occasionally holding it up to his own throat.
Eventually, cops decided they needed to take action.
“For Bess’ own safety it was decided to get him in custody as quickly and safely as possible. At this point a police K-9 was released and the K-9 bit Bess on the left forearm just inside the front door of the residence,” cops say.
“Bess was then taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for the dog bite and a mental evaluation.”
Bess’ mother has told police her son is suffering from depression and had multiple head injuries during his career that spanned from 08′ to 13′.
Bess has been charged with unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle, and faces up to 2 years if convicted.
His family is currently trying to get Bess a mental evaluation instead of seeing him sent to prison.
