Former college football coach and ESPN TV analyst Lou Holtz spoke at a luncheon the Republican National Coalition for Life hosted during the RNC. Lou had a lot of thoughts to share regarding immigration. Much of it inflammatory and insensitive, given the current climate. According to Betsy Woodruff of The Daily Beast, while discussing immigrants Holtz said:
I don’t want to become you. I don’t want to speak your language, I don’t want to celebrate your holidays, I sure as hell don’t want to cheer for your soccer team!
Holtz started his remarks by saying the influx of immigrants coming to the U.S. constitutes an “invasion” and new immigrants need to assimilate better. Holtz cited his grandparents as immigrants from the Ukraine who learned to speak English. Sounds like a hollow tenet of the RNC’s dogmatic immigration rhetoric, but I digress…
Holtz also made use of a reference that 2012 Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney famously got into hot water over during his failed campaign. If you don’t remember that story, check it out. Holtz continued:
A lot of people make a living by the way they vote. Forty-seven percent of people make a living by the way they vote. They can make a living by the way they vote but they can’t make a life.
It’s easy to dismiss Holtz as a senile old man that doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I can’t speak on the man’s mental capacity. However, I do know these beliefs are not unique to Holtz and many people that will vote in this election feel the same way. That is a frightening thought. It’s only mid July, we have three and a half months left in this year’s election cycle. No doubt we’ll have many more ridiculous statements and comments right up until election day. Can’t wait…
