This entire season of Power has been building towards the moments experienced over the last two episodes. By the way, I’m not sure on the voting cycle for the Emmy’s, but if this show doesn’t win any awards…right?! Last night’s episode didn’t take us through all of the mini subplots, everything was centered around the transport of Lobos and Ghost and Tommy’s plan to kill him.
The episode opens in the aftermath of Tommy killing Holly and the attempted assassination of Ghost. Both men are a little worse for wear. So, for the time being, the boys are back together and mission critical is killing Lobos. There is too much heat on Tommy and Ghost and Lobos is the source of that heat. During a discussion at Tommy’s apartment Tasha stops by and is brought up to speed on the plan, although somewhat reluctantly by Ghost. It’s as if Ghost and Tommy are still experiencing the aftershock of the traumatic attempts that neither can function at full tilt without the other. Ghost decides to use the Karen Bassett meeting as a cover for the intricate plan to kill Lobos. Tasha and Ghost present as husband and wife, even down to faking a shower, and a shoe shine at the luxury Bassett property. Tasha even has Ghost’s phone and texts Angela to keep the lines of communication open so that alibis are set and nobody suspects anything is amiss. Meanwhile Ghost is off setting the the plan of killing Lobos in motion. Lobos is being transported under government protection to another location and there are a couple things at play. Mike Sandoval and Lobos’ guys are aware of the transport and plan to derail the transport and retrieve Lobos. Tommy is assisting the team per Lobos’ request but is executing Ghost’s plan as a double cross. The transport vehicle is derailed and massive gunfire ensues and Agent Greg Knox is wounded. Once Lobos is retrieved by the team, Tommy drives the getaway car and pulls under a bridge. One of Lobos’ men, suspicious that something might be up, begins to pull out his cell phone and Ghost appears and kills him, leaving Tommy, Ghost and Lobos alone in the woods. Lobos spends the majority of the walk to his presumed death trying to talk his way out of it. Tommy realizes there is a cell phone on Lobos and that they could be tracked using the device’s GPS. Ghost and Tommy then debate whether killing him is the right decision. Lobos manages to escape briefly but is eventually caught by Ghost and ultimately killed. The right decision. Ghost and Tommy disagree about what is best but Ghost decides killing Lobos is right. For Ghost, he sees Lobos as the only thing stopping him from the life he wants to lead. Lobos is a threat to his kids and Tasha. In his mind, Lobos being dead is a huge weight off his shoulders and brings a sense of relief.
Lobos’ escape is not so cut and dry for the agency task force. For one, the team doesn’t know he is dead. Mike Sandoval knows Lobos didn’t make it to the agreed upon destination after the escape and now he has to figure out what to do next. Also, the wounding of Agent Knox has consequences. During the escape, Knox took a couple bullets to the chest but it turns out he was wearing a vest and is ok. But, the manner in which Lobos was “rescued” leads to suspicion from Knox. We all know that Sandoval is Lobos’ mole. But Knox and AUSA Cooper Saxe won’t look there first. The obvious target is Angela. Knox and Coop already hate Angela, so making the leap and blaming her as the mole is an easy next step. Plus, Knox knows Ghost’s real identity and his connection to Angela so this isn’t likely to be a good look for her. Knox has made enough of a stink that a formal internal investigation is in the works. The entire task force is going to be forced to answer a series of questions and we all know Angela will be the one in the crosshairs. While Sandoval is the actual criminal and the mole, Angela is the one that Knox knows for sure has been lying, covering and is involved in a sexual relationship with a known drug dealer. I see big trouble on the horizon for Angela in the coming weeks.
For the last couple week’s, the security team has made it into the extra thoughts section of our weekly episode recap, and now we know why. We all knew that something was up with the hired security firm. The blatant disregard for Ghost’s instructions, showing up just in time to save Ghost’s life. The obvious way the camera would linger on the head of the security firm in every scene. It turns out the main guy is Milan; the Serbs’ original drug connect. Yes! The guy whose supply Tommy and crew stole during season two to force the Serbs to the table and be a part of Ghost and Tommy’s network. Ghost and Tommy have a huge problem on their hands. Milan is a known cannibal and to make matters worse, that’s the only thing they know about the man. You see, the thing with Lobos is, while he was unpredictable he was a known entity. Ghost and Tommy could plan for the crazy that is Lobos. Who knows what the deal will be with Milan? The guy is infiltrated within Ghost’s clubs and knows all the details of his personal life. Yikes!!! Milan strikes me as the type of guy that if you owe him something he will interfere with your ability to pay him back, just so he could keep you on the hook and slowly torture you. The initial vibes on this are obviously not good. It will be interesting to see how Ghost and Tommy manage to get their way out of this one.
Given all of the impending doom surrounding Ghost, is it any surprise he decided breaking up with Angela was the right decision? What an emotional scene. Even if you hate Angela as many do, you had to feel something in that scene. Ghost and Angela’s love is so real and visceral. They have gone through so much to get to where they are and much of it has not been good for the other people in their orbit. They’ve both done bad things and hurt really good people and broke up a family. But nobody watching this series could say that the love was and is not real. Ghost and Angela are madly in love and want to spend their lives together. The break up was devastating for both, seeing Ghost in the hallway and hearing Angela balling her eyes out was intense. For Angela the news that Ghost wants to break up comes out of nowhere. She knows the line he feeds her about his kids is crap and that he’s keeping something from her. For Ghost, he can’t be the man that she wants him to be at least not now, given the Milan development. He loves her but knows that the closer he is to her the more in danger she is. These two have been through so much, the fairy tale love affair of the fifteen-year-old high school sweethearts is over. Did anyone really think this was going to be happily ever after?
Courtney Kemp and crew are doubling down on reveals and moving the pieces around on the chessboard. As we all knew, it was not going to be a seamless transition for Ghost to the legitimate world. Now that he sees the threats at hand, has broken up with Angela he is a man on island and for the first time there doesn’t seem to be a clear path or way out.
A few extra thoughts:
- Tasha has been killing us with the one liners this season. This week, when texting Angela and pretending to be Ghost: “Damn, don’t this bitch have a job?”
- Tariq tried to run away from home. Something is going to happen there? Also, what’s up with Reyna and Yasmin? Do they even exist anymore?
- Tommy will be dealing with Holly’s death for a while. That opening scene was so telling.
- Tasha is such a ride or die chick. The scene where she finds the separation papers is gut wrenching. After all she is helping Ghost yet again and she sees the physical proof that their marriage is over.
- How about Coop telling Knox that he should try and get Angela back in the sack? Random unintentional comedy moment.
- Ghost is an amazing marksman. Check out his work over the course of this series, dude can kill at any range.
- No Kanan or Dre this week. Poor Ghost, he has it coming from all directions.
