The questions surrounding the brutal helmet to helmet hits sustained by Panthers QB Cam Newton have been fast and furious. After practice on Wednesday, the reigning Super Bowl MVP deflected from the hot topic to discuss an off-field venture he has recently undertaken.
The streets of Charlotte will soon have their palates pleased by Newton’s own Smokn Aces food truck. The truck received its operating permit from Mecklenburg County just this week. In Wednesday’s press conference, Newton described the truck as a side project that would allow and encourage more interaction in the community.
He notes that player appearances are normally contractual obligations and that private family time is sacred. The food truck will give Cam “an opportunity to be normal”. He wants his appearances to be “normal” and not “wowing” to his patrons.
The truck was handpainted by an artist that caught Cam’s eye on IG, Mark Deren. On one side, Newton is striking his signature Superman pose; on the other side, he is pointing in the stands. Deren was flown in from California to complete the project, which took him 4 1/2 days.
Smokn Aces will debut this weekend before the home opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Following that, the truck will operate in the Goodyear Arts lot every Friday-Sunday.
