Presented by HBO, Insecure is an edgy, fresh comedy that delves into the multi-layered lives of two millennial-aged black women living in South Los Angeles. The limited run show is created by YouTube star Issa Rae (creator of popular web series The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl).
Starring Issa Rae as the show’s main character of the same name, with Yvonne Orji in the co-pilot seat as best friend “Molly,” viewers are treated to a front row seat into the lives of facet of the lives of black woman. Replacing the stereotypical depictions of past shows, these characters are living, breathing three dimensional, everyday women with vibrant lives who struggle and stumble along the way in their attempts to balance career fulfillment, love and fun with their fair share of missteps along the way.
While the show will be centered on two women, show consultant Jay Ellis shared in a recent interview with Huffington Post that he hopes Insecure will also change the perception of black men.
I wanted to find a way to change the conversation about black men in this country. Because we’re just like anybody else at the end of the day,”
“Which is what’s so important about this show, yes, there are nuances and specifics to every demographic of people, but we all kind of boil down to the same few things. We all wanna be loved, we all want happiness, we all want success, we want happy, healthy families. There’s things that we all want as humans, and so I think that’s one of the things that always keeps me going.”
The series officially begins on Oct. 9 but HBO subscribers can view episode 1 right now.
Insecure is created and executive produced by Issa Rae, this eight-episode series is also executive produced by Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Beck, Jonathan Berry, and Larry Wilmore as a consultant.
