It seems like no matter where you turn these days every black athlete or entertainer is asked to share their thoughts on Colin Kaepernick’s protest and that is a very dangerous thing. Lil Wayne was the latest to share his thoughts.
In an interview with Skip Bayless on the Undefeated, Wayne says there is no racism in response to a question from Skip regarding some of the rappers’ audiences being predominantly white.
I don’t want to be bashed, because I don’t want to seem like I’m on the wrong side. But I thought that was clearly a message that there was no such thing as racism.
This is where the danger exists. Every black person with a platform should not speak without careful consideration of the facts. Wayne was asked a question and responded. He didn’t take the time to carefully consider the impact of his words. Sure Weezy, white people at your shows is indicative of the non existence of racism.
The question from Skip was leading. He knows good and well that white audiences support Wayne’s music and the “wrong” answer would have been problematic for wayne. This is a common tactic used by the mainstream to detract, deflect, discredit and cause divisiveness among certain communities.
Wayne’s retort doesn’t do anybody any favors. See the video below and judge for yourself.
