Game 1 of the 2001 NBA finals between the 76ers and the Lakers produced one of the most memorable, iconic moments in NBA history as Sixers’ guard Allen Iverson infamously stepped over guard Tyronn Lue of the Lakers. You don’t even have to be a fan of the game to almost instantly recognized the image that helped solidify Iverson’s unique dominance in the sport.
2016 has been exceptional for both participants in the play with Lue winning the NBA Championship in his first year as Cavaliers head coach and Iverson getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. During his speech last week, Iverson brought up the iconic play, explaining how he and Lue formed a tight bond following the exchange.
Lue confirmed their friendship, as well as an anecdote from the Hall of Famer’s speech. When asked about his thoughts of Iverson coaching in the NBA, Lue told TMZ, “Yeah, he can come coach with me.”
The Cavs return the core of their championship squad and Lue was given a 5-year $35 million contract extension. It would be interesting to see The Answer pacing the sidelines giving pointers to Irving and the rest of the Cleveland backcourt.
