Cincinnati boxing great Aaron ‘The Hawk’ Pryor has passed away after a long struggle with heart disease.
He was 60 years old.
“Aaron was known around the world as ‘The Hawk’ and delighted millions of fans with his aggressive and crowd-pleasing boxing style,” widow Frankie Pryor said. “But to our family, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.”
Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard also spoke on the loss of Pryor:
“I have great love, respect and admiration for my long-time friend,” Leonard said. “He will be greatly missed by so many.”
Regarded by many as a top-10 fighter in boxing history; Pryor was voted “Greatest Junior Welterweight of the Century” by the associated press, as well as holding championships in both the WBA & IBA.
He retired in 1991 with a professional record of 39-1 with 35 knockouts. He’s also been inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame (96), as well as the World Boxing Hall of Fame (01).
