Cam Newton was notably absent from the Carolina Panthers’ practice on Wednesday after leaving Sunday’s game against the Falcons in the fourth quarter. Newton was placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol following a hard hit suffered on a two-point conversion. Coach Rivera will provide an update on Newton’s status on Thursday when he addresses the media. Derek Anderson will address the media at that time as well.
Backup Derek Anderson entered the game going 16 of 19 with two touchdown passes before throwing 2 interceptions; one was a pick six to end the Panther rally. Following practice, third string QB Joe Webb and receiver Kelvin Benjamin spoke regarding the possibility that Cam will not suit up for Monday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to Webb, Newton was “in good spirits” when he spoke with him at Bank of America Stadium Wednesday morning. He also stated that Anderson has his own personality and a lot of experience on his side. Benjamin stated that the Panthers won’t make a ton of changes after their 1-3 start. The most notable change is the absence of the quarterback running game; a dynamic Newton adds when he goes under center.
Newton has only missed a handful of practices since entering the NFL in 2011. This is his first documented concussion and he must pass a series of neuropsychological tests in order to resume practice. Newton has been the target of some particularly brutal hits all this season. Several helmet to helmet hits in the season opener against the Broncos prompted conversation regarding safety and the league’s concussion protocol.
With Anderson under center on Monday, the Panthers would still have an experienced quarterback as Anderson was a former starter in Cleveland; even making the Pro Bowl in 2007.
