In a half-time interview during game 5 of the WNBA Finals, Freshman President Lisa Borders reflected on the high points of her first year on the job. Along with increases in attendance and viewership, Boarders addressed how the league changed their position on teams that staged Black Lives Matters protests during the season.
Borders says the league reversed the fines out of respect for the lives the players live beyond the court.
“As a child of the civl rights right movement, I am so blessed to work with these young women and watch them find their individual and collective voices. They play basketball for a living but they have dimensions to their lives beyond the court and that is in their communities and the fact that they are able to speak truth to power individually and collectively is amazing to me. Very proud of them.”
Game 5 of the Finals is still in progress. Here’s hoping no matter the outcome the league continues to grow, thrive and give women a platform to play professional basketball.
