A 85-year-old Iowa barber Darel Sterner, got to see his favorite baseball team end a drought right before the heavens called him in. On Wednesday night during game 7, his family was near him as they updated him on the score throughout the game. Throughout the playoffs the well-known barber health faded as the games went on, as he took hospice care. By Game 7 of the World Series he was drifting in and out during the game. Sterner had his own TV near his bed, and his family is sure that he was aware of the near heartbreak when the Indians tied the game up, and also when the Cubs got the final out and ended the drought.
“They won,” his son Durk said in his ear. “The Cubs won the World Series!”
It’s a moment, Durk said, that will stay with him forever.
“We all believe he is in heaven, one of the first Cubs fans there to see them win the World Series before passing away,” Durk said.
We all hate to see our loved ones go away, but if it’s any proper way to see your last days I’m pretty sure Sterner went out with peace as he saw lived during something he dreamed of seeing all his life. Sterner will have a Cubs World Series Champion shirt placed in his coffin on Monday when his funeral is takes place.
