The NBA released a statement on Tuesday, announcing it will host its first ever awards show on June 26, 2017. The awards show will be televised exclusively by longtime broadcast partner TNT and will feature, current and former players, coaches and the biggest names in celebrity and entertainment.
The awards show will include the announcements of the 2016-2017 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Kia NBA Rookie of the Year, Kia NBA Sixth Man Award, Kia NBA Most Improved Player and Coach of the Year. Venue, hosts and logistics will be announced at a later date.
Well, it’s about time! The NBA has long been a league that capitalizes off the star power of its individual players and as the most fan friendly sport this makes sense. The NFL has its award show on the weekend in between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl, capitalizing on the lack of on field play to highlight the league’s best players. It’s an okay event, but is still heavily focused on the NFL. Something tells me the NBA will be able to make their event more of a spectacle and a must see event.
