The first round pick for the New York Jets in 2007 might be making a decision soon on his future with the team and perhaps the league. Darrelle Revis says he can still play the game but expects nothing but class from the Jets.
As the Jets’ season is coming to an end (cheer for excitement, fans), the question of a few players’ future is now a bigger topic of discussion. One person whose name has been tossed around a lot this season has been Darrelle Revis. Revis has been burned a few times and Revis Island came back to bite him over the course of the season. Although he’s made it quite clear that he doesn’t intend on retiring, the idea may be possibly lingering about in his head.
The cornerback is pushing his 10th year in the league but what he expects now from his team comes from the front office. Revis wants to be treated with class.
“Would I love to be here? Yes,” Revis said in an exclusive locker-room sit-down with The Post. “Will I be back? That’s a great question. My thing would be this: Do the New York Jets want to treat my situation with class or no class? With me being one of the best players in the history of this franchise, do they want me to retire here or not retire here?
“That’s the biggest question. It’s black and white. It’s not very complicated.”
Revis is well aware of what could possibly happen. If the Jets decide cut him, that opens about $9 million in cap space. On the flip side, if he stays with the team, he’ll be paid $15.33 million. In addition to knowing these numbers, he knows he’s not the same 24-year old he once was before. The clock is ticking as he compared his relationship to football to an amorous relationship.
“Now, can I still play? Yes, I can still play. This game is a love for me. It’s like a girlfriend. And we’ve been dating for a long time — many years. She’s been great to me and I appreciate it. I love my girlfriend.”
The decision to stay is ultimately not up to him so only time will tell what will happen in the off season.
“I can still play this game at a high level. I’m going to be there until I’m told I’m not going to be here. Whatever the situation is in the offseason, it’ll get handled the way it’s supposed to. It depends on how they want to handle it.”
The Jets final game for the season will be on Sunday, January 1, as they face the Bills at home in MetLife.
