The term “G.O.A.T” gets tossed around a lot lately but when you listen to Serena Williams speak about it, the term will take on a new meaning for you. Williams explains why she’s not considered the greatest.
In a what was an intimate interview with ESPN, rapper Common got to interview Serena Williams and she opened up a lot about gender issues in sports. That’s when they landed on the topic about being considered the greatest.
“I think being a woman is just a whole new set of problems from society that you have to deal with, as well. If I were a man, I would have 100 percent been considered the greatest ever a long time ago.”
The full interview is really enlightening but what she said holds a lot of truth. The double standard is really apparent and the fight for equality is the song that never ends. Just think about day to day things you see occur, even in your workplace. Williams does not get the recognition she deserves and then it also turns into a race debate that’s far more apparent. Williams legacy is undoubtedly one of the greatest of all time and perhaps, dare I say it, the greatest tennis star of all time. Let’s not forget that the Williams sisters fought for equal pay as well.
Good Morning America also brought up a great point. Why does the word “women” have to be in front just to distinguish the sport? It does affect that label. Only recently have we heard “men’s swimming” or “men’s gymnastics.”
Williams next mission is the Australian Open and she is already the favorite to win. Check out the full interview in which she discussed other topics.
