Get ready for yet another Dr. Dre documentary. According to a press release from HBO, Menace II Society director Allen Hughes is bringing a four part documentary series to the network detailing the long running partnership and friendship between Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
Hughes’ film is the story of two men from completely different backgrounds uniting together under a common need to succeed and make impactful change. If you don’t know, Dre and Iovine are behind some of the most critical moments in pop culture over the last thirty years. From the early days as a rap star and producer, to Beats, to the partnership with the University of Southern California, Dre and Iovine have been in lock step. HBO programming President Casey Bloys said:
THE DEFIANT ONES has everything you expect in a great story — drama and humor, tragedy and triumph. Allen Hughes takes you on a journey through some of the most important flash points of popular culture, and I’m delighted that we can bring this unforgettable saga to our viewers.
Director Allen Hughes filmed Dre and Iovine over a three-year period in making the doc. It is also to feature extensive interviews from music icons, including: Bono, David Geffen, Eminen, Nas, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Jon Landau, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Snoop Dogg, Bruce Springsteen and will.i.am. As well as never-before-seen footage from recording and writing sessions with Eazy-E, JJ Fad, Stevie Nicks, N.W.A., Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and U2, among others.
This should be a good one. Defiant Ones will air on HBO sometime in 2017.
