The city of Roseville doesn’t care if your car is parked in your driveway. If it’s running, you will be citied.
According to WXYZ in Detroit, Taylor Trupiano left his car running to warm up and shake off the freeze while he ran back in the house. When he returned a few minutes later to leave, he found a parking ticket for $128 on the window. Trupiano told WXYZ he thought the ticket was a joke before sharing the very real citation on Facebook.
“I thought it was some kind of joke at first, and then I was thrown back by it,” he said. “I was really surprised.”
WXYZ reached out to Roseville Police Chief James Berling who explained tickets are given to discourage residents from leaving their cars running and increasing the likelihood of car theft. Berling further elaborated by stating increased car thefts drives up insurance rates.
“We have five to ten cars stolen this way every winter,” Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said. “It’s dangerous, and of course it drives everyone’s insurance rates up. It drives our crime rates up.”
It makes sense but it still seems overly punitive to ticket someone in their own driveway. Maybe a courtesy note and a warning next time.
