The Chicago Bulls are 21-22, currently in 8th place in the eastern conference standings. A deep playoff run isn’t likely, and according to ESPN’s Nick Friedell there is debate within the organization about a rebuild. Guard Dwyane Wade is 35 years old and not anxious to be part of a rebuild. The future Hall of Famer is contemplating what to do next, saying:
At the end of the year, you sit back and see what the team is, what direction they’re going in. I would be a liar to say that I want to play on a team with all 21-year-olds. You know what I mean? And be a part of the future building. I would be a fool to say that. But you also want to be in the best position for what you think is for you at that time, too.
Wade is already on record saying he is not ring chasing. He has three championships and a Finals MVP. But if he’s not on a rebuilding team or a title contender, I can’t imagine him playing out the stretch on a middle of the road team.
If he is willing to take a pay cut, he could rejoin LeBron and form another super team. Maybe help the ringless members of the banana boat crew (Melo and CP3) finally get a championship? That wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.
Wade is in year one of a two-year deal with the Bulls worth $47 million, which includes a player option for the second year. If the Bulls do indeed hit the reset button and start unloading assets (see: Jimmy Butler) he will have to consider a lot of things regarding his basketball future.
