ESPN’s Rich Cimini is reporting that the New York Jets plan to cut DB Darrelle Revis, unless he’s willing to accept the new normal. Revis is owed $15.3 million on his current deal and a $2 million roster bonus. That’s a lot of money for a player whose skills are on the decline.
The Jets have salary cap issues and could use some relief. There is a silver lining for Revis and the Jets, if both sides are willing. Cimini writes:
If they can get Revis to slash his total compensation to, say, $6 million, it might make economic sense to keep him as a No. 2 corner or a safety. Remember: He has a $6 million guarantee coming to him no matter what. If you’re going to write the check anyway, you might as well have the player — or so they may believe.
This is obviously a good move for the Jets, but it’s also good for Revis. He may think he still has the ability to be a #1 cover corner, but recent play and stats would suggest otherwise. Revis is not in a position to demand a high salary or that the remainder of his contract is paid out. A move to the #2 corner or even safety could prolong his career and his high football IQ is still a valuable asset. Just not an asset worth $15.3 million per season.
