Ice Cube and the BIG 3 have announced that NBA legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving has agreed to be the head coach of one of the franchises in the 3on3 league. Dr. J joins a league that already boasts legends like Allen Iverson, Gary Payton, George Gervin, Clyde Drexler and Rick Barry.
We wrote yesterday how the league is on a streak of great moves and signing Dr. J is just the latest. League President and Commissioner Roger Mason Jr. could not be more excited, saying:
The Doctor is one of the most esteemed NBA showmen of all time. His in-your-face style of play transformed the game as we knew it, and we’re privileged to have his basketball acumen, and passion for the game as a coach in the BIG3.
What is so relevant and important for the BIG3 is the way in which the basketball community is embracing the new league. Getting buy in from these type of HOF ex players and legends is huge. This league could be a viable “retirement” option for guys when they can’t play in the NBA any longer. If the revenue streams grow and the fan appetite for 3on3 is there, this could help a lot of players post NBA career.
The BIG3 league kicks off on June 25th at the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, March 18 at 10:00 AM on Ticketmaster. Fans can also get tickets at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center starting Monday, March 20 at noon, if tickets are still available.
