BSO had a chance to visit Pixar Studios in the San Francisco Bay area for a first look at the highly anticipated animated feature film Cars 3. With the film’s director Brian Fee, and an immense team of talent to guide us behind the scenes to where the magic happens, we can give you a look behind the curtain before Cars 3 hits theaters June 16.
The third stanza of the popular series features an aging Lightening McQueen who becomes involved in a near fatal collision at the beginning if the film. Lacking the motivation to return after recovering, McQueen enlists the help of old friends to return him to the forefront. Once there, he discovers his previous sponsor sold the company to a new owner plus a grocery list of challenges in the form of youthful, updated cars that could threaten his climb back up the ladder to prominence.
Previous film alumni’s Owen Wilson (Lightening McQueen) and Larry the Cable Guy (Mater) and Bonnie Hunt (Sally Carrera) return and are joined by new characters Cristina Alonzo (Cruz), Nathan Fillion (Sterling) and Armie Hammer (Jackson Storm).
Sterling joins the team as McQueen’s promoter and the owner of his new high-end training facility. Focused on the marketing side of Lightening’s career, it’s hard to tell if he really wants him back out on the track or if he just wants the former champion to hang it up for good.
Cruz enters McQueen’s post-crash life as an enthusiastic trainer who is there to revolutionize his approach to training and get him back into competitive shape. As their relationship starts to grow, Cruz finds herself exploring her own insecurities and how she steered her life away from the track to the gym.
Poised to spoil McQueen’s return to the top is Jackson Storm, a younger, updated racecar that’s the latest and greatest thing in racing. A high-tech monster built for victory, he’s ready to take his place in history by dethroning the aging champion.
