An investigation is underway in Florida after a State Attorney received multiple letters in the mail containing racist messages and a noose.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala received two threatening and racist letters in the mail, one of which included a noose. The first arrived on March 20 with the second arriving a week later from the same person. Ayala is the state’s first African-American state attorney.
Ayala became the focus of public scrutiny in Florida last month when she announced she would not seek the death penalty against any defendant, including accused cop killer Markeith Loyd. Following her announcement, Gov. Rick Scott reassigned 23 of her capital cases. Ayala in turn filed a lawsuit against Scott earlier this month, claiming the Governor does not have authority to remove her from the cases.
