Despite the original movie premiering over 40 years ago, Rocky Balboa is among the world’s most-known boxers, even if he isn’t a real person. But outside of Bayonne, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who knows Chuck Wepner, the real life fighter that served as the inspiration for Rocky.
Chronicling the life of real life Rocky inspiration Chuck “the Bayonne Bleeder” Wepner, Chuck, is the story of a flawed but lovable man who’s desire for attention far exceeded any life or career goals he ever considered. Possessing just enough boxing skills to win fights by knockout (usually before the ring doctor would stop the bout due to his excessive bleeding), Chuck at best is an average Joe who’s real gift was making the poorest decision possible in every situation. But despite that, his big heart made you want to see him win.
Starring Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) in the title role, Chuck’s roller coaster life filled with highs (the fight against Muhammad Ali) and lows (losing his wife and child to philandering and drugs) makes you want to shake your head at his stupidity and give him a hug at the same time.
In an awkward conclusion Chuck realizes it’s not about the fame but about the people who love you no matter how many times you screw up. But maybe, just maybe, if he poses next to the Rocky statue one more time, someone will recognize him.
