Marvel could have gone the easy route with the sequel to the Guardians of The Galaxy.
No one would have been that mad if they went light on the drama, high on the humor and super heavy on the action.
But, one of the reasons that Marvel has been successful with their franchises is that they think outside of the box.
Light spoilers will follow so continue at your own risk.
The movie starts out the way you thought it would, with a dance action sequence and to be frank I sort of rolled my eyes because I thought more or less this is what the entire movie would be about.
But everything change as soon as Yondu shows up on screen and immediately you knew this was going to be a little deeper than your standard Marvel movie.
Without getting too deep into it, Peter Quill’s long lost father EGO who is a living planet (different pops than the comics) finds him.
While you know it is too good to be true, their relationship is the root of the movie that branches out to many relationships. That is context of the entire movie (unlike what the headline said, that was just to get you to click, but just hold on I’ll explain it) how all these different relationships are interacting.
Peter with EGO.
Peter with Gamora.
Gamora with Nebula.
Rocket with everyone.
Youdo with The Ravengers, Peter and EGO.
Drax with Mantis.
Groot with growing up.
That is what makes the movie works, not the action, not the jokes that are hit or miss (all hits though with Drax).
In the end EGO is shown to be shooting his shot in the DMs (told you I’d explain) with a lot of women on many planets not just Peter’s mom for a reason I won’t tell you, but you have to watch why. I found it interesting because the male EGO is often said to be the reason why we try to plant our seed so to speak in as many women as possible. EGO’s reasoning on a much simpler level is no different than a lot of guys in modern day society. You will understand what I mean when you see the movie.
Don’t leave the theatre there are like 70 post credit scenes, that helps explains some things and set up some new things.
Not your typical Marvel movie, but that is what makes the Guardians unique.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 Dollarnaire stars.
