Desus Nice and The Kid Mero host the popular late night show on Vice Land, Desus & Mero. The two Bronx natives have taken late night by storm, and do it unconventionally. Well, unconventional if your late night preferences happen to be Kimmel or Fallon.
Daniel Baker (Desus) and Joel Martinez (Mero) bring the high school lunch table and barbershop culture into your living room. They riff on topics of the day, ranging from politics, sports, and pop culture to stuff that happens only in the Bronx.
The duo met in high school many years ago and connected again via Twitter. Both men were stuck in jobs they hated and took to Twitter to make fun of their circumstances, co-workers, and the absurdity of life. The two eventually started the Bodega Boys podcast and as their cult following grew, people in the business took notice. The two did work with Complex in a series titled Desus vs. Mero and ultimately all their work was noticed by TV producer/show creator Erik Rydholm. He of the Around the Horn, PTI, Highly Questionable fame.
Rydholm was a fan of the duo and told them they had to be on television and the rest is history. Desus & Mero is in its first season on Vice Land and they’re already 108 episodes in.
The Bronx duo appeared at Vulture Festival and told me what makes their show so successful. See the video below. My thanks to Desus Nice and The Kid Mero.
