Adam Jones let it be known-any Red Sox fan can “catch him outside”.
Jones isn’t playing any games or holding back any words for the fans who threw peanuts at him and called him the N-word on Monday.
Jones recalls the rude comments and insults made to him during a game against the Boston Red Sox. The hurtful comments also included the N-word, which was Jones’ last straw.
Fenway, billed by the Red Sox as “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark,” didn’t show love for Orioles’ centerfielder Jones.
On Monday night Adam, tells reporters from USA Today and the Boston Globe that he was subjected to racist taunts and a bag of peanuts being thrown at him in the dugout at Fenway Park.
Jones can be seen in the video below describing the horrific ordeal. He also states that Monday night’s incident was the worst case of abuse that he has had to deal with in his career to date.
“It’s different,” he said. “Very unfortunate. I heard there was 59 or 60 ejections tonight in the ballpark. It is what it is, right. I just go out and play baseball. It’s unfortunate that people need to resort to those type of epithets to degrade another human being. I’m trying to make a living for myself and for my family.”
As an African American, I do think that it is important to bring incidents like this to the light. Many players have been quoted as having similar experiences to Jones.
In the wake of the Jones incident, Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia told reporters, “I’ve never been called the ‘N’ word anywhere but in Boston.”
The organization did release an apologetic statement. Red Sox owner John Henry and team president Sam Kennedy are meeting with Jones on Tuesday to assure him that they are taking steps to prevent Monday’s incident from happening again.
Jones also stated that this isn’t the first incident dealing with racial behavior at Fenway park. This time he says he felt, “Compelled to speak out.”
