The BIG3 debuted on Sunday to rave reviews at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, on Wednesday’s conference call, the league announced an update to gameplay. Initially, the first team to 60 points wins the game (must be by at least 2) League founders Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz said the league is now making 50 the winning score.
While the league was extremely successful in its debut, the 4 games lasted over 5 plus hours. That does not lend itself well to the three hour broadcast parameters with FS1. Reducing the score to 50 should trim a significant amount of time off the entire product. That’s what makes this league unique and gives it a chance to be really successful. Unlike other long established leagues, the BIG3 can literally iterate on the fly and tweak their format to ultimately make the experience rewarding for the fans.
The league updated the injury status of two players. 3 Headed Monsters guard Jason Williams is out for the season with a knee injury, and Power guard Corey Maggette had surgery on a lower leg injury. No timetable has been set for Maggette’s return.
The BIG3 will be in Charlotte, North Carolina this Sunday for week 2 games.
