Today we know Donald Trump as famous celebrity businessman and 45th President of The United States. The one decision that in hindsight doesn’t seem to be a good choice that Trump made was not purchasing the Dallas Cowboys in the mid 80’s when the value wasn’t as high.
”I could have bought an NFL team. There were three or four available, that still are available, including, of course, the Dallas Cowboys.” Trump said in a New York Times article in 1984. He continued to say “I could have bought an NFL club for $40 million or $50 million, but it’s established and you would just see it move laterally. Not enough to create there.”
President Trump instead decided to become the owner of New Jersey Generals of the newly founded USFL, a league that was created to rival the NFL but didn’t last long. Trump was so sure that his decision was the right one, that he bragged and also had words for the guy who would eventually own the Dallas Cowboys.
”I feel sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a no-win situation for him, because if he wins, well, so what, they’ve won through the years, and if he loses, which seems likely because they’re having troubles, he’ll be known to the world as a loser.” Trump also said in the New York Times article.
Well that guy became billionaire Jerry Jones, who bought the Cowboys for $140 million in 1989, became a 3-Time Super Bowl champion & a Hall of Fame owner. Jones now has the Cowboys worth $4 billion and to the world he is not known as a loser as President Trump predicted. Wonder if Trump still feels bad for the poor guy.
