Details are trickling out about now disgraced ex Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze. The devout Christian head coach was fired last week amid reports he used his work issued cellphone to call an escort service. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach has learned that Ole Miss became aware of the call when Mississippi St. fan Steve Robertson found it while searching Freeze’s phone records. Robertson alerted the lawyer defending former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt in a suit against the University.
Freeze’s cell phone records from his University issued phone are public. Robertson says he was looking through the phone records for a call from Freeze to a local reporter, as research he’s doing for a book. Robertson says the intention was not to take down Freeze. Let’s be clear, the escort service calls alone were not the reason Freeze was fired. That’s something he and his wife need to work out. Freeze’s recruiting tactics and alleged NCAA violations in terms of pay for play were the reasons.
What are the chances the person that found the escort service call was a Miss St. fan? Robertson say’s he’s been a lifelong Bulldogs fan. Maybe it was just coincidental. Lesson learned for Freeze and any person in a position of prominence in SEC football. Either don’t do any dirt, or if you’re going to do dirt, cover your tracks better. Football is not just a game in the south, it’s identity and life.
