Venus Williams loves Wimbledon and Wimbledon loves Venus Williams. It’s an undeniable love affair and there’s simply no other way to put it. At 37-years-old, Williams made history by becoming the oldest player to reach a Wimbledon final in the open era by defeating British No.1, Johanna Konta.
Williams defeated Konta, who is Britain’s first semi finalist since Virginia Wade in 1977, per The Guardian , in straight sets of 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and fifteen minutes at Center Court, with the home crowd clearly behind Konta. Williams wouldn’t let this historic chance slip by, reaching her ninth Wimbledon final.
This was Williams’ 101st singles game at the All England Club, and her 10th semi-final. No active player can match Williams’ 20 Wimbledon appearances. Williams’ showed her experience against an opponent who has only played at Wimbledon 12 times.
Williams will now face Gabrine Muguruza on Saturday, where she will aim to defy the odds yet again by becoming a six-time Wimbledon champion.
