It’s been just over 10 years since the tragic and unbelievable murder-suicide committed by Benoit.
When the news of his death came it was shocking to the wrestling world. Such a great wrestler gone too soon. However, once details were revealed it turned very quickly. If you don’t remember, that Raw they had a tribute show for him and then on ECW Vince McMahon gave a statement and that was essentially the last time Benoit’s name was uttered on WWE programming.
Benoit isn’t mentioned at all. If you have WWE network and watch anything that has Benoit in it, his matches aren’t marked. For example, when you watch the ’04 Royal Rumble you won’t have the marker at the end.
There’s been no mention of him but since this marks 10 years there have been people talking about what it was like backstage during that time.
John Cena was there and he gave a tribute to Benoit but he understands why he isn’t mentioned. Cena was doing “An Evening with John Cena” series of events in Australia where he was asked by a fan and here’s what he said.
Very difficult question, and I’ll answer it like this. Often times, we get caught up in a person’s ability and their performance – and this transcends WWE – this is a problem in sport. It is also a problem in entertainment. People will do bad things. But if they are good at what they do, sometimes those things are overlooked. I don’t in believe that. I believe you should take ownership for your actions. All of them. Not just ones that are performed in front of an audience. I think our company’s stance on the entire situation set a precedent for athletics, and a precedent for entertaining of taking ownership for your actions.
Very honest and he’s right. This subject matter is obviously very sensitive and WWE has probably been flagging this video.
However, if you want to watch Cena give his answer, flip the page.
