It might not have been the crowning of the new Wimbledon champion, but it will to go down as one of the greatest moments – not just in Wimbledon history, but in sports. A gesture can go a long, and many fans endeavor to be close to their idols in real life. Eye contact with their favorite sports stars can last a lifetime, but nothing beats getting their attention for an autograph.
That’s what a loyal fan did on Thursday afternoon after Rafael Nadal’s second round win. The always classy Nadal obliged by signing not a piece of paper or a shirt, but something more personal – the fan’s prosthetic leg. Everyone around the world will likely agree that this autograph signing was unique and special, CBS Sports’ Kevin Skiver seems to agree too.
Many were surprised by the fan’s action, but Nadal wasn’t phased and gladly signed the fan’s prosthetic leg to a round of applause. A genuine moment of gratitude was officially born at this year’s Wimbledon.
Now, whether the fan goes on to keep using the same prosthetic leg or rather frame it, we might never know. However one thing we do know is that if it wasn’t for this fan’s quick thinking in that instance, we may have never witnessed this great moment between a loyal fan and a tennis legend in Rafael Nadal. We could possibly not see a greater interaction in sports for the whole of 2017.
