Kyrie Irving still wants a trade, but it’s been crickets so far. While LeBron has been subtweeting and rapping along to Meek Mill, Kyrie appears to be fantasizing about trade destinations. According to an appearance by Peter Vecsey on the HoopsHype podcast, Kyrie wants the Clippers.
“I’m told [Kyrie] wants to play for the Clippers. […] That’s the team I was told he wants to play,” Vecsey said. “He loves L.A. He’s been working out a lot there this summer.”
Kyrie would actually be a good fit for the Clippers but this request is unlikely to come to fruition. Kyrie does not have a “no trade” clause, so Cleveland can move him any where, any time, to any place in the league. And right now, the Clippers don’t have the assets to acquire Kyrie. Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan don’t solve for losing Kyrie, and Patrick Beverly and Sam Decker are not comparable to a talent like Irving either. Cleveland’s lack of 1st round picks makes it even tougher to add a third team to the equation, so this trade request is just a flat earth pipe dream for now.
Kyrie’s interest in LA will be something to watch for in a few years when he hits free agency, but for now it’s Cleveland that will determine his immediate future.
