In a move designed to allow players to express individuality, the NFL has relaxed league restrictions on warm-up and in-game cleats.
This season, players will be allowed to wear personalized cleats during warm ups and have been given more flexibility when it comes to in-game cleat colors.
During pregame warm-ups, players can wear any design they want, so long as it doesn’t depict commercialized or trademarked logos, other than the league-approved footwear brands (Nike, Under Armour and Adidas). The cleats also can’t have anything that would be deemed offensive or express political views.
During the games, players can wear solid black, solid white, or a secondary team color. Previously, could be fined for in-game footwear in a color that the team had not declared as the dominant footwear color.
Odell Beckham, Jr was infamously fined $18,000 last season for wearing personalized cleats honoring the late Craig Sager. Those cleats would be permitted under the new rules.
