The national anthem protests are reaching far and wide across America and one college is doing what it can to preempt any potential protest. According to TMZ Sports, Colorado Christian University has banned its student-athletes from kneeling during the national anthem. Comments from the university’s officials said the demonstration shows “disrespect towards our country.”
How many times must this be said before people understand what the protest is about? The protest being conducted by Colin Kaepernick is to bring light to the racial injustice, police brutality, and systemic racism impacting black people in this country. Civil disobedience, freedom of speech and the right to protest are all fundamental of a free democratic society, which America purports itself to be.
A “Christian” university denying it’s student athletes the right to protest doesn’t sound very “Christian.” Jeff Hunt who runs the university’s “think tank” said the following:
[I’m] proud that CCU will not take part in these disrespectful protests. Unfortunately, refusing to stand during the National Anthem dilutes the message of the protestors and portrays disrespect towards our country, all who are serving it, and our veterans.
Where have we heard that response before? A high ranking official at this university is proud that the athletes will be denied rights. He believes that protesting racial injustice is disrespectful. Makes you wonder what “God” has to say about that?
