In sports when you have evenly matched opponents all we are doing as media is guessing.
In fighting sports it is even more difficult because no matter the opponent it only takes one punch to change history.
Fighting sports are the only ones where you can be losing every round and win in a single moment. I have gone back and forth with this Canelo-GGG fight for months and in my mind I keep asking myself this question.
Is Canelo a better fighter than Daniel Jacobs?
Jacobs gave GGG all type of problems with his speed, movement and power. GGG eked out of win mainly because he was able to knock Jacobs down, but many people myself included thought he lost.
Jacobs is a legit middleweight, wasn’t coming up in weight and was much bigger than GGG. Jacobs has legit power but it never seemed to bother GGG even though he was hitting him with some flush shots.
I think Canelo is a very good fighter and when he is in there with smaller guys he demolishes them, but he has had issues with guys his own size (Lara & Trout). Those fighters were more boxers, but I think people don’t give GGG enough credit for his boxing skills.
Canelo fought JCC, but JCC is a bum and didn’t even try. It is likely if JCC fought GGG he would have been knocked out, he went the distance with Canelo.
Canelo does have advantages, he is younger, faster and in his prime. He has been in big fights like this before and use to the spotlight.
But, in the end he isn’t a true middleweight and GGG was so focused that he decided the birth of his kid wasn’t worth missing days of training.
That is the sign of a killer. In the end I think Daniel Jacobs would beat Canelo at middleweight and if he can, I believe GGG will as well.
Look for GGG to TKO Canelo in the 10th.
