You mess with the bull, you get the horns. Roger Goodell is learning that the hard way as sources say that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is impeding contract extension negotiations for the current NFL commish.
Jones is now being singled out by some owners and league executives as the reason Goodell does not have the contract extension that many expected to be in place before this season kicked off, per sources. Goodell’s current deal as commissioner expires in 2019.
The increasingly edgy relationship between Jones and Goodell has sharpened to the point where Goodell’s long-term future could be in question, according to league sources.
Although Jones has previously denied being a member of the NFL’s compensation committee, he does consider himself to be a representative for the 26 owners who are not on the committee. According to sources, Goodell was informed that Jones would be heavily involved in the process during the same time period that he was deciding Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott’s punishment for violation of the league domestic violence policy.
Elliott’s suspension is currently on hold and he is allowed to play while the court battle rages on.
