It’s barely been two weeks since Panthers QB Cam Newton was under fire for his sexist comments in response to Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue’s question about Devin Funchess embracing the physicality of his routes.
For the second day in a row, he has decided not to speak with the press following practice.
Newton has never missed his weekly press conference when healthy and normally speaks on Wednesdays. Panthers PR offered no explanation other than he just didn’t want to do it. Coach Ron Rivera stated, “I thought he had a press conference today but I guess not.” Players can face penalties for not making themselves available to media.
Of note, Rodrigue quietly returned to the Panthers beat yesterday although she has remained silent on her usually active Twitter account. Rodrigue faced backlash of her own after Twitter found racist tweets sent from her account. There are reports black players in the Panthers locker room were not pleased that there wasn’t as much outrage for her racist tweets as there was for Cam’s comment. One could surmise that maybe the reason Cam has decided not to speak. The two days he hasn’t spoke are the two days she has been back on the beat.
