Boston Celtics’ guard Gordon Hayward is unlikely to return this season after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured left tibia and a dislocated ankle. The surgical procedure came after sustaining these injuries in his first game as a Celtic in the team’s first regular season game in Cleveland on Tuesday.
Hayward’s agent Mark Bartelstein told the Boston Herald that there is no timetable for his return and that playing this season is very unrealistic.
“Things went perfectly in the surgery. But it’s a long road. It starts next week when he gets the stitches out, and then we go from there. The good news, though, is that there’s nothing they found that they didn’t expect to find.”
Hayward addressed Celtics fans in a recorded video in the TD Garden prior to his surgery at the team’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. He noted that he is in good spirits and he will be supporting his teammates while recovering. The Celtics are currently 0-2 and will head to Philadelphia tomorrow to take on the Sixers.
