The amount of sportsmanship displayed during this week’s media workouts just shows how classy these two athletes are. But come fight night, statements will be made out in the ring. Who will win?
2018 is off to a pretty good start, in terms of boxing of course. Errol Spence Jr. vs Lamont Peterson is going down tonight at the Barclays Center. Spence is clearly a fan favorite and his style of boxing has many impressed. However, it must be noted that in his early days, Spence use to spar with Peterson. So it’s time where the pupil faces off with the teacher.
Now I know what you’re thinking: age is a major factor here and Peterson can’t keep up with Spence’s speed. While that may be true and Peterson said it himself, “Many expect me not to lose and I respect their opinion but I’m a winner.” You can’t expect Peterson to go down that easily. But there are factors that may impede his victory tonight.
As mentioned earlier, Spence’s speed is something that is unmatched and perhaps might catch Peterson off guard. In addition, Peterson hasn’t boxed in about a year and then his previous fights have been quite sporadic. This may hurt him in the ring despite him having a vast resume. Peterson will be a test on Spence considering his experience but this journalist believes that Spence will win by decision. While knock outs are fun to watch, a fight going all the way is something that we all want to see.
Spence did give a lot credit to Peterson while calling out others, i.e. Danny Garcia. Peterson is the only one who actually answered the call to this fight. Its inevitable to say that Peterson isn’t the underdog in tonight’s bout. I personally look forward to seeing Peterson pushing Spence to his limit and genuinely putting up a fight.
Spence will be making things quite interesting in the welterweight division if he wins tonight. That’s something for fans to also look out for. I wonder if he’ll bring out what he put on Kell Brook.
The action goes down tonight on Showtime at 9 PM, EST.
